In Japanese culture, the cherry blossom (Sakura) represents delicate beauty, while the Samurai embodies resilience, discipline, and precision. Mazda integrates these two elements into its vehicle development process, applying design principles inspired by Sakura (aesthetics) and manufacturing principles from Samurai (ensuring quality and performance).

Inspired by the cherry blossom, the Japanese automaker developed its "Car as Art" design philosophy. Mazda's design team meticulously considers the proportions of body lines and surfaces to create connection and consistency. For example, the optional Soul Red Crystal color on its models reflects light along body curves, highlighting lines and surfaces.
A company representative stated that the Sakura-based design principles are applied from the front and body to the rear. "Every detail is developed according to Japanese aesthetic principles, focusing on the synchronization of form and light. Sakura serves as a standard to shape form, proportion, and color, from the initial sketch to the finished vehicle," the representative explained.

Mazda also applies the Samurai imagery to industrial production, symbolizing discipline, precision, and adherence to processes. During feudal Japan, Samurai often carried self-forged sewing needles to repair armor or treat wounds. Hiroshima, where Mazda's headquarters is located, was the birthplace of hand-forged needle craftsmanship, which later evolved into the renowned Tatara steelmaking technique and the Monotsukuri spirit – blending craftsmanship, experience, and psychology in manufacturing.
This principle gradually spread to many other industries, including shipbuilding and automobile manufacturing, and Mazda integrated it into its quality control and vehicle performance foundation. "Similar to forging needles, steel components undergo tempering, annealing, grinding, and polishing steps. Mazda applies this principle in manufacturing engine parts, chassis, and components, ensuring durability and stable operation," a company representative shared.

Sakura and Samurai are two symbols that help Mazda define a distinct philosophy in the global automotive industry. The Japanese automaker believes that a Hiroshima sewing needle can make a difference in the sewing experience, just as every minute detail on a car contributes to the driving experience, safety, and the vehicle's overall value.
"Hiroshima's legacy of craftsmanship, from the Samurai needle to the Monozukuri technique, has become a core foundation, shaping Mazda's manufacturing culture globally," a company representative stated.
