On the morning of 1/6, as part of a concentrated effort to identify and manage individuals linked to drugs in the area, a task force visited Trieu's home. They sought to persuade him to go to the police station for a drug test. Trieu refused to comply, locking himself in a first-floor bedroom and brandishing a knife in defiance.
Lieutenant Colonel Pham Ngoc Khanh, a team leader from the Drug Crime Investigation Department, approached Trieu, attempting to persuade him to drop the weapon and cooperate.
Authorities alleged that while the task force was on duty, Trieu suddenly opened the door and attacked. Lieutenant Colonel Khanh, in an attempt to subdue Trieu, was stabbed in the neck. The wound severed his external carotid artery, resulting in significant blood loss.
