34 people die in traffic accidents on first day of Tet holiday

On the first day of the Tet Binh Ngo holiday (14/2), 52 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, resulting in 34 deaths and 31 injuries, according to the Traffic Police Department, Ministry of Public Security.

Compared to the same period last year, the first day of the holiday saw a decrease of 18 accidents, 8 deaths, and 6 injuries. All incidents occurred on roadways, with no accidents reported on railways or waterways.

On the same day, local police forces inspected and processed over 10,000 roadway violations. Authorities temporarily seized 101 automobiles and nearly 2,500 motorcycles, revoked 283 various driver's licenses, and deducted points from over 1,600 driver's licenses.

Among these violations, over 2,100 cases involved alcohol impairment, and over 2,200 cases were related to speeding. Other common infractions included overloading cargo, exceeding passenger limits, and using mobile phones or other electronic devices while operating vehicles.

Beyond direct enforcement, local authorities recorded over 5,200 cases through surveillance camera systems, with over 1,100 instances deemed eligible for cold fines – penalties issued based on camera footage.

The Tet Binh Ngo holiday for civil servants and workers spans 9 days, from saturday, 14/2 to sunday, 22/2. This period includes 5 Tet holiday days as stipulated by the Labor Code and 4 weekend days.
