Barge carrying 900 cubic meters of sand capsizes off Vung Tau coast

A barge carrying over 900 cubic meters of sand experienced engine failure, drifted freely, and sank off the coast of Vung Tau, with three crew members rescued by a passing fishing vessel.

On December 6, Captain Huynh Thanh Quy, 46, from Tay Ninh, along with two colleagues, was operating a sand barge from An Giang to Sao Mai port in Vung Tau ward. Near Nghinh Phong Cape, the vessel's engine unexpectedly failed, causing it to drift in the waves and capsize.

The three crew members drifted at sea until a passing fishing boat spotted and rescued them. Subsequently, a Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard patrol boat arrived, transporting all three ashore for medical attention. Their condition is now stable.

Authorities have issued a maritime notice to warn vessels of the sunken barge's location, guiding them to pass safely. The vessel owner is currently coordinating a salvage operation.
