On the afternoon of 9/12, Nguyen Van Cu, a resident of Nhut Tao commune, discovered an unusual, large bird while visiting a sedge field near his home. Suspecting it was a rare species vulnerable to hunting, he reported it to the authorities.

The Nhut Tao Commune People's Committee, in coordination with the Mobile Forest Protection and Forest Fire Prevention and Fighting Team No. 2 (Tay Ninh Forest Protection Department), inspected the bird and identified it as a great hornbill. This species belongs to Group IB, indicating it is endangered and prohibited from commercial exploitation. The bird weighed about 2,5 kg, appeared healthy, and showed no signs of injury. Authorities took the bird in for care before its release back into the wild.
