42-year-old goalkeeper secures World Cup spot after almost retiring

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon helped Scotland qualify for the 2026 World Cup, despite recently being on the verge of retirement.

"It's emotional", Gordon told BBC after Scotland's 4-2 victory over Denmark on the evening of 18/11. "I've played for the national team for over 20 years, endured many defeats and disappointing matches. I never thought I'd be part of such a fantastic World Cup campaign."

Gordon began playing for Scotland in 2004, alongside a 24-year club career with Heart of Midlothian, Sunderland, and Celtic. After two decades struggling with injuries and a demanding schedule, he considered retiring in summer 2025. However, thanks to encouragement from national team coach Steve Clarke, Gordon extended his contract with Heart of Midlothian for one year.

Gordon started for Scotland in the final two World Cup 2026 qualifiers, filling in for injured goalkeeper Angus Gunn. He played a crucial role in the 4-2 victory against Denmark, helping the team secure a World Cup berth after 28 years.

"Coach Clarke advised me to play for one more year, saying I might be needed", Gordon added. "This victory is a fitting reward for all the effort and years I've put in."

Scotland has participated in eight World Cups, with their last appearance in 1998. They have never advanced past the group stage.

When Scotland heads to the finals in North America next June, Gordon will be 43 years and 6 months old. If he plays, he will be the second-oldest player to compete in a World Cup. The current record belongs to goalkeeper Essam El Hadary in the Egypt - Saudi Arabia match in 2018, at 45 years and 161 days old.
