Amorim: 'Everton deserved to win against Man Utd despite being shorthanded'

Coach Ruben Amorim admitted Man Utd deserved to lose to Everton, even after playing with a man advantage for 77 minutes at Old Trafford in Premier League matchweek 12.

Man Utd began sluggishly but gained a man advantage in the 13th minute after midfielder Idrissa Gueye received a direct red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane. Despite this numerical superiority for 77 minutes, the home side failed to control the game and even conceded a first-half goal from a long-range shot by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

"Everton played better, whether with 11 or 10 players," Amorim stated after the 0-1 defeat on 24/11. "I felt from the first minute that we lacked the same intensity as our opponents, so they deserved the victory."

The Portuguese coach emphasized that the issue wasn't the result, but rather his team's attitude and approach to the game. "The opponent gave us an advantage with the red card," Amorim explained. "But when they were down to 10 men, we should have pushed them back, controlled every transition, and maintained absolute focus. We failed to do that. The result was poor, but my feeling during the match was even worse."

Despite pressing Everton in the second half, Man Utd created few clear chances. Their most dangerous moment was a first-half soft shot wide by defender Patrick Dorgu. Late in the game, striker Joshua Zirkzee had two dangerous headers, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved both.

Regarding player availability, Amorim stated he would assess Matheus Cunha's condition further, as he missed the match. While his replacement, Joshua Zirkzee, "played his part, the entire team must perform better."

Amorim's substitutions, bringing on Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, and Diogo Dalot, generated only a few more chances, insufficient to alter the game's outcome. The 40-year-old coach revealed he remained silent in the dressing room post-match. "Tomorrow, the entire team will train, and I will address it," he stated.

This defeat caused Man Utd to miss a top 5 opportunity. It marked their first Premier League loss at Old Trafford when playing with a man advantage. Everton's victory at the stadium was a rare achievement, occurring only two times in the past 32 years.
