Former Indonesian international Greg Nwokolo reacted strongly to the issue, immediately after Sjafri's statements circulated. Nwokolo accused the 61-year-old coach of avoiding responsibility. He questioned why Indonesia performed poorly for 90 minutes, rather than focusing solely on a throw-in situation and blaming the players.

"Indonesia played like a team that hadn't trained in a long time," the 39-year-old Nigerian-born former striker added. "Indonesian football has many incidents; it's like a circus. I respect Sjafri, but I cannot accept that excuse."
Indonesia surprisingly lost 0-1 to the Philippines in their opening Group C match at SEA Games 33. The goal conceded came from a throw-in, which is usually considered an Indonesian strength. After the match, Coach Sjafri stated that the team had trained thoroughly, but the players did not execute as instructed. "We assigned players to mark specific opponents, but that wasn't done for the goal conceded," said the coach who previously led Indonesia to a SEA Games 33 gold medal.
Indonesia was expected to contend for a semifinal spot, but the loss to the Philippines exposed many problems. According to CNN Indonesia, Sjafri's team displayed disjointed ball movement, a lack of connection between lines, and no clear attacking strategy. These limitations further fueled public skepticism regarding the team's preparation for the tournament.
"Other nations are focused on developing football, while Indonesia only creates controversies," Nwokolo commented. "Those involved in Indonesian football only want to return to their comfort zones."
As a player, Sjafri was a midfielder and holds a bachelor's degree in economics. He has managed every level of Indonesian national teams: U16, U19, U20, U22, U23, and the senior national team. However, his tenure with the senior national team was temporary.
Indonesia will play their final group stage match against Myanmar on 12/12. They must win to compete for the best second-place spot, as the Philippines have already secured first place in Group C with 6 points. However, if Vietnam and Malaysia draw the day before, both reaching 4 points, Indonesia will be eliminated.
