Katia Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, has fiercely defended her brother against criticism from Portuguese compatriots, labeling them "hypocrites" and accusing them of "betrayal". Her strong remarks emphasize Ronaldo's two decades of dedication to the Portugal national team, asserting that he has been instrumental in carrying the nation's footballing aspirations.
"You are hypocrites", Katia wrote on Instagram on 21/11. "You act as if Cristiano has just announced the end of the world. It is shameful. When Cristiano does something that doesn't fit the script, you cause an uproar." She further compared the criticism to Judas' betrayal of Jesus, a historical story from Christianity. Katia accused his detractors of ingratitude, given all Ronaldo has contributed to Portuguese football. "My brother has carried Portugal for 20 years", she added. "My country, unfortunately, has too many individuals like Judas. His distinctiveness is why my brother is where he is today. Ronaldo rose to the top because of his distinctiveness. You know, the top of the world."

The backlash against Ronaldo stems from several recent controversies. Some critics highlight Ronaldo's close relationship with Saudi Arabian crown prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, who is alleged to have orchestrated the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi seven years ago. Ronaldo's promotion of the World Cup 2034, for which FIFA previously faced controversy over human rights issues when awarding hosting rights to Saudi Arabia, also drew criticism. The 40-year-old forward also became a subject of gossip due to his admiration for US President, Donald Trump.
Previously, Ronaldo joined a delegation accompanying Mohammed Bin Salman on a state visit to the United States. There, he was welcomed and praised profusely by President Donald Trump.
