Lindsey Vonn, the renowned "ski queen", faces a dire prognosis after a severe accident at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with French orthopedic surgeons warning of a potential leg amputation. The 41-year-old athlete sustained a complex tibial fracture during the women's downhill ski final on 8/2, requiring three surgeries and more interventions for stabilization.
The incident occurred approximately 30 seconds after Vonn left the starting gate in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Milan, Italy. She lost control, hitting her right shoulder on a course marker before tumbling down the slope and landing on her back with her skis entangled. Vonn cried out in pain as medical personnel quickly responded.

Vonn later explained on Instagram: "My Olympic dream did not end like a fairy tale, that is simply life. In downhill, the line between a tactical run and a catastrophic injury can be just 5 inches. I took a turn about 5 inches too narrow, my right arm got caught in a gate, which twisted me and caused me to fall". Her participation had already sparked controversy, as she competed despite tearing her anterior cruciate ligament just days before the event. Vonn, however, asserted that this previous injury was unrelated to her recent fall.
Doctor Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, an orthopedic specialist in Lyon, issued a stark warning regarding the severity of Vonn's injury. He stated that in some similar cases, patients are forced to undergo amputation. "The recovery timeline is difficult to predict", Sonnery-Cottet told RMC Sport. "It could take several months for her to walk normally. The immediate goal is first to save the leg and enable her to walk. We cannot yet think about a return to elite competition. Some injuries like this can lead to limb amputation".
According to Sonnery-Cottet, images Vonn shared on Instagram show her fitted with an external fixator – a temporary device that stabilizes the bone from outside the body with metal pins. This indicates that doctors have not yet been able to fully repair the fracture. "The injury is extremely severe, it will cause difficulties for at least many months, and could even leave lifelong sequelae", he added.
Another French doctor, Nicolas Baudrier, shared with L'Equipe that Vonn's injury might be a comminuted fracture with multiple bone fragments, accompanied by a risk of skin, nerve, or muscle damage, which increases its severity. He noted that even for young individuals, a full recovery process can take about one year. Experts commonly see this type of injury in traffic accidents, especially involving motorcyclists.

Despite the grim outlook, Vonn remains resolute. She stated that her tibia is currently stable but requires many surgeries for proper recovery. "Although the ending was not as expected and I endured intense pain, I have no regrets", she said. "Standing at the starting gate was already a victory. Speed skiing is always a dangerous sport. In life, too, we dream, we love, we dare to jump, and sometimes we stumble".
Vonn, widely considered one of the greatest athletes in skiing history, has a career marked by both triumph and adversity. She won four World Cup titles (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012), including three consecutive seasons, and secured a gold medal in the downhill event at the 2010 Winter Olympics, marking the first Olympic title for US women's skiing. She also holds the record for eight World Cup season titles in the downhill event and had a total of 82 World Cup stage wins when she retired in 2019, before being surpassed by Mikaela Shiffrin. Her career was interrupted many times by severe injuries, but Vonn made a return to competition in late 2024 after nearly six years away.
