"The talent and inspiration a player like Bellingham brings is scaring some people," former Black striker Ian Wright said on the Stick to Football podcast on 20/11/2023. "They are not ready for a Black superstar like him. To them, what Bellingham shows is too arrogant."
Wright's view comes amid increasing criticism of Bellingham from the media and a segment of fans. The 22-year-old midfielder stirred controversy with his irritated attitude when substituted in the 84th minute of England's 2-0 win over Albania on 16/11/2023, in a World Cup 2026 qualifier. England coach Thomas Tuchel frankly reminded Bellingham that he must comply with instructions, change his attitude, and show respect for teammates coming onto the field.

Wright also suggested that people tend to prefer a Black player like N'Golo Kante, the French national team midfielder who is always humble and focused on his work. In contrast, players with strong personalities like Paul Pogba or Bellingham often irritate a segment of the public. "They cannot touch Bellingham," the former Arsenal and England striker added. "And when England easily qualifies for the World Cup, they try to do something to add to the story."
The relationship between Tuchel and Bellingham was not smooth. In June, the German coach spoke about conflicting views between him and his mother: "Many of Bellingham's behaviors can be controversial. I see this through my family, especially my mother. Sometimes, you see Bellingham angry, and it makes my mother feel disgusted." Not long after, Tuchel publicly apologized to Bellingham, admitting he used inappropriate words and asserting he had no ill intent.
Under Tuchel's leadership, England flawlessly qualified for the World Cup 2026. The team won all 8 matches in Group K, scoring 22 goals and conceding none. They finished 10 points ahead of second-placed Albania.
Bellingham became a key player for England before Tuchel's appointment. At Euro 2024, he played a central role, featuring in all 7 matches, scoring two goals, assisting one, and leading the "Three Lions" to the final. The Real Madrid midfielder also featured in the squad that reached the Euro 2021 final and the World Cup 2022 quarter-finals.
With Real Madrid, Bellingham won the Champions League and La Liga 2023-2024. In the last three years, he has been on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or, with his best result being third place in 2024.
