Time Out updated its ranking on 8/6, based on a survey of over 24,000 residents in 150 cities worldwide. The survey assessed food quality, affordability, and local culinary culture. Results were then cross-referenced with evaluations from Time Out's expert panel and food editors. The highest-scoring city from each nation was selected for the final list of 20 global representatives.
Leading this year's ranking is Lima (Peru), followed by Bangkok (Thailand), Mexico City (Mexico), London (UK), and Barcelona (Spain). Ho Chi Minh City secured the sixth position.
According to Time Out, 2026 marks a transformation for Ho Chi Minh City's high-end dining scene. The city is no longer considered an "emerging" destination but has solidified its place on the world culinary map.
In April, CieL, a 15-seat restaurant by chef Le Viet Hong, was ranked third on Food & Wine's list of the world's best restaurants. Previously, this restaurant earned a Michelin star after only 7 months of operation.

A few days later, Tales by Chapter, Vietnam's first zero-waste plant-based kitchen, was featured on Conde Nast's list of the world's best new restaurants and awarded a Michelin Green Star on 4/6.
The British magazine also highlighted the city's trend of elevating traditional dishes, including pho. Pot Au Pho 2.0, launched this year, features a 12-course tasting menu centered around Vietnam's iconic dish. However, the magazine notes that just steps away, diners can still enjoy an equally high-quality bowl of pho at street stalls for a much lower price. This coexistence of street food and high-end restaurants creates Ho Chi Minh City's unique appeal.
In this year's ranking, Ho Chi Minh City received a 70% evaluation score from Time Out's expert panel. The survey also showed that 75% of local residents rated their dining experience in the city as "good" or "excellent."
Street food is considered Ho Chi Minh City's most prominent strength, receiving 63% agreement from survey participants. Following closely is the coffee shop system and coffee culture, with a 61% positive rating.
According to Time Out, the blend of long-standing eateries, vibrant coffee culture, and a thriving wave of high-end restaurants has made Ho Chi Minh City one of the world's most notable culinary destinations in 2026.
Time Out is a UK-based travel, culture, and lifestyle magazine known for its global rankings of destinations, cuisine, and urban experiences. Its annual lists are compiled from local resident surveys and evaluations by its international experts and editors.
