South Korean prosecutors have recommended a 15-year prison sentence for former first lady Kim Keon-hee. The recommendation came today during their final arguments in a trial where she faces charges of stock manipulation and bribery. In addition to the prison term, prosecutors are seeking a fine of approximately USD 1.36 million and an additional penalty of over USD 640,000 to offset illegal gains.

Kim is accused of profiting nearly USD 550,000 in 2010 and 2011 by participating in a stock manipulation scheme. This scheme, executed by a criminal group, targeted small-cap, thinly traded stocks. Her lawyers have denied the stock manipulation allegations, stating that Kim neither directed nor personally executed any transactions.
The bribery charges stem from Kim allegedly receiving two Chanel bags, one diamond necklace, and Korean ginseng, estimated to be worth about USD 55,000. These gifts reportedly came from the Unification Church as part of the church's efforts to expand its influence. Kim's lawyers contend that the Unification Church presented the bags as a gift without expecting anything in return. Han Hak-ja, the leader of the Unification Church, who is also currently on trial, has denied allegations that she directed any bribery to the former first lady.
Despite denying all wrongdoing, the former South Korean first lady has publicly apologized for the disruption she caused.
The Seoul Central District Court is expected to issue its verdict on 28/1/2026.
Kim's husband, former President Yoon Suk-yeol, is also on trial. He faces accusations of masterminding rebellion by declaring martial law a year ago, which plunged the country into a political crisis. These accusations could lead to a life sentence or even the death penalty, but former President Yoon denies any wrongdoing.
Last month, a special prosecutor recommended a 15-year prison sentence for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. Han, who served under Yoon, is accused of aiding and abetting the attempt to declare martial law. The former prime minister denies these charges. The court has scheduled his sentencing for 21/1/2026.
