Iran publicly executes man convicted of rape

Iran's judiciary announced the public execution of a man convicted of raping two women in Semnan province.

Mizan Online, the judiciary's news agency, reported today that the execution took place in Bastam, Semnan province, in the country's north, after the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.

According to Semnan provincial officials, the man lured women and used force to rape them. He also threatened and intimidated the victims, making them fear harm to their reputation. Officials did not disclose the convict's identity.

Iran typically carries out executions inside prisons, but some individuals are publicly executed. Two weeks ago, a man was publicly hanged for murder.

Most death row inmates in Iran are executed by hanging. According to Amnesty International, Iran is the second-highest executor globally, after China.
