Thanh Ngoan, former Director of the Vietnam Cheo Theater where artist Hai Diep worked for many years, announced that he died due to advanced age and declining health. His memorial service took place on the afternoon of 27/1, and the artist was laid to rest in his hometown of Dien Ha, Hung Yen (formerly Thai Binh).
In recent years, the artist had retired from artistic activities. His last television appearance was in 2015, alongside the cast of the film "Chuyen nha Moc".
Born in 1942 in Thai Binh, a region rich in cheo art, Hai Diep joined the Cheo Troupe of the General Department of Politics at age 17. Without formal schooling, he learned on the job, with experienced artists of the troupe directly passing on their craft. When the troupe merged to become the Vietnam Cheo Theater, he transferred and remained there until his retirement. From his early roles in "Moi tinh Dien Bien", "Cuoc doi chi Tam", and "Quan Am Thi Kinh", audiences recognized his rustic, simple acting style that resonated with people, especially in comedic roles.

Despite dedicating his life to cheo art, Hai Diep gained widespread recognition through television films, most notably "Chuyen nha Moc". During the film's production, director Tran Luc was introduced to Hai Diep by his father, People's Artist Tran Bang, to offer him the role. The artist vividly portrayed a father who loved his children dearly. Not wanting his daughter to endure the hardships of farm work, he was determined to take her to the city to prepare for university exams, encountering many bittersweet situations. The role achieved success beyond his imagination.
Hai Diep also participated in over 20 films, primarily playing humorous roles in productions like "Bui vang" and "Hai Binh lam thuy dien". While he had a knack for the screen, cheo remained his love and purpose in life.
