The information was released by South Korean police on 2/6.
The Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul forwarded the case to prosecutors, involving six individuals: Psy, three medical staff members (including a professor and a young doctor from a Seoul university hospital), and two company employees. All six face charges of violating the Medical Service Act and have been released on bail.
Psy is accused of obtaining prescriptions for Xanax and Stilnox at a Seoul university hospital from 2022 to 2025 without a direct examination. He then allegedly had third parties, such as his manager, pick up the medication on his behalf.
Xanax and Stilnox are psychotropic drugs primarily used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression. Due to their high risk of addiction and dependency, medical procedures and related laws stipulate that only patients who have undergone a direct physical examination at the hospital can receive these prescriptions.
Under South Korea’s Medical Service Act, the act of obtaining prescription drugs through an intermediary carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison or a fine of 10 million won (approximately 173 million Vietnamese dong).
Psy, 47, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, gained global fame with his 2012 hit "Gangnam Style". The music video was the first to reach one billion views on YouTube and remained the platform's most-watched video from November 2012 to July 2017. After 13 years, the video has garnered over 5,9 billion views.
