The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is investigating two separate incidents in Brooklyn where groups of men were filmed emerging from manholes. These mysterious appearances, captured on video, have raised concerns, prompting a police inquiry into their activities.
One video, recorded around 2 a.m. last friday, shows a man in a white shirt and shorts lifting a manhole cover, allowing seven other men to emerge onto the street.
Another video, also from Brooklyn, depicts a man in a red shirt opening a manhole cover from below, then climbing onto Bedford avenue amidst moving traffic. Six more men followed him out, at least three carrying shovels, all equipped with headlamps.
Authorities confirmed they have not yet linked the two incidents. A police spokesperson stated, "No injuries were reported. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing."
On 1/6, police revealed their primary theory: the men might be searching the sewer system for lost valuables, a senior law enforcement official informed NBC News.
To ensure public safety, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) deployed its highly trained Emergency Service Unit officers into the sewer system. Their inspection found no illicit items left behind by the individuals.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection, responsible for managing the sewer infrastructure, also conducted an inspection and reported no damage to the system's equipment.
