Woman dies, 4-year-old son critical in suspected arson by common-law husband

Police are investigating a house fire suspected to be arson by a man following a relationship dispute, which resulted in the death of one woman and left her 4-year-old son in critical condition.

On 19/5, a leader from the People's Committee (UBND) of Phong Thanh commune stated that local police are coordinating with provincial police to investigate a case of property destruction and murder that occurred in the area two days prior.

Previously, on the morning of 17/5, the 43-year-old woman's single-story house in Nhan Dan B hamlet, Phong Thanh commune, Ca Mau province, unexpectedly caught fire. Residents discovered the fire, reported it to authorities, and three people from the house—a man, a woman, and a 4-year-old boy—were rushed to the emergency room.

The man died on the way to the hospital. The mother and child suffered severe burns and were undergoing intensive treatment. By the afternoon of 18/5, the woman succumbed to her injuries. The boy was subsequently transferred to TP HCM for treatment in critical condition.

According to initial investigations, the man had been living with the woman as a common-law couple, and they shared a 4-year-old son. Previously, the two had conflicts, and the man had threatened to kill his common-law wife. Investigators suspect he set the house on fire.

At the scene, all belongings inside the house were completely burned. Authorities examined the scene and collected evidence for the investigation.
