Xiaoli, a 28-year-old professional singer from Zhejiang, China, experienced persistent throat discomfort, heartburn, and acid reflux for two years. These symptoms gradually worsened her voice, eventually leading to complete voice loss.
Doctors diagnosed Xiaoli with laryngopharyngeal reflux, attributed to her excessive bubble tea consumption.
The high sugar content in bubble tea stimulates acid production in the stomach. Excess acid can reflux into the esophagus, causing heartburn and difficulty swallowing. The high levels of sugar and caffeine in bubble tea not only increase acid production but also relax the lower esophageal sphincter, damaging the throat lining and vocal cords.

Doctors report a rise in laryngopharyngeal reflux cases, largely linked to dietary habits and stress. Untreated, this condition can lead to leukoplakia of the larynx, a precancerous lesion.
Excessive bubble tea consumption can also contribute to skin aging, acne, tooth decay, heart disease, diabetes, gout, and insomnia.
Doctors recommend limiting spicy, fatty, and sugary foods. Bubble tea consumption should be moderate—no more than one cup per day, with minimal added sugar.
