These tiny insects often appear when ripe fruit is left out. They infest rooms, causing considerable annoyance, especially when guests are present.
Pest control expert Jonathan Nicholls from the UK has researched the most effective methods for eliminating fruit flies and preventing their return.
"To effectively deal with fruit flies, you first need to understand their life cycle," Nicholls explains. "Adult fruit flies are attracted to fermenting sources in the home, such as overripe fruit, vegetables, or sweet substances. Female flies lay hundreds of eggs on these surfaces, and the eggs hatch into larvae in just one day."
This rapid reproduction cycle can lead to infestations if not addressed promptly. Understanding their development helps you focus on effective treatment, including eliminating both breeding sites and adult flies.

One of the simplest yet most effective methods is creating an apple cider vinegar trap. Pour some apple cider vinegar into a bowl, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and poke a few small holes in the top. The sweet aroma attracts the flies, while the plastic wrap traps them inside.
Similarly, a small amount of wine or beer can be used as a substitute for vinegar. The enticing smell lures the flies in, and they can't escape.
Nicholls also emphasizes the importance of cleaning to eliminate and prevent fruit flies from appearing in the first place. "Start by removing any overripe or fermenting fruits and vegetables and dispose of them properly," he says.
Wipe down surfaces, especially areas prone to food and drink spills. Finally, don't forget to regularly clean the sink drain, as food particles often get trapped in the pipes, creating an ideal breeding ground for flies.
In a video that has attracted 1.4 million views, content creator Genevieve Levy, owner of a life hack Tiktok channel, also shared another highly effective method. Levy mixes dish soap with sugar or honey in a bowl, adds a little vinegar and water, covers it with plastic wrap, and pokes holes to trap the flies.
She also suggests pouring boiling water down the sink drain to kill any flies lurking in the pipes, a common breeding site.
