5 reasons why Barca chose Rashford

Loaning Marcus Rashford from Man Utd is a sensible move for Barca, both athletically and financially.

Barca urgently needs a star winger. The two starting winger positions currently belong to Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, a pair who contributed to 99 goals last season (52 goals and 47 assists). If either of these players is sidelined, Barca needs a high-caliber, energetic, and effective backup. With 138 goals and 77 assists in 426 appearances for Man Utd, Rashford could be the solution. If Raphinha is unavailable, the 27-year-old English star can directly replace him in his preferred left-wing position. If Yamal is absent, Raphinha can switch to the right wing, as happened in several matches last season, leaving the left wing open for Rashford.

Rashford can play as a center forward. Robert Lewandowski was Barca's top scorer last season with 42 goals. But with participation in multiple tournaments, the La Liga champions need a reliable backup. The experience of Lewandowski missing almost both legs of the 2024-2025 Champions League semi-final, where Inter eventually won 7-6, is still fresh. Additionally, the Polish striker turning 37 on 21/8 is also a concern.

During his time at Man Utd, Rashford frequently played as a center forward. He can step in whenever Lewandowski needs a rest or is injured.

The move makes financial sense. To facilitate the transfer, Rashford agreed to a pay cut from 21 million USD to 16.3 million USD. If he performs well in the 2025-2026 season, Barca has the option to buy him for just 35 million USD. The salary and transfer fee, both relatively reasonable, represent a safe option for the Spanish club. If things don't work out, Barca can send Rashford back to Man Utd.

Rashford's enthusiasm is a plus. The 27-year-old forward targeted Barca during the winter transfer window before moving to Aston Villa. After Aston Villa couldn't secure a permanent deal, he continued to consider Camp Nou as his top choice. He also accepted a salary reduction and the possibility that Barca might not register him with La Liga in time. Rashford's eagerness contrasts sharply with Nico Williams, who negotiated with Barca before unexpectedly re-signing with Bilbao.

Other options are beyond Barca's reach. After failing to acquire Nico Williams, Barca doesn't have many viable options left in the transfer market. Luis Diaz is a top player but could be expensive. Liverpool recently rejected a 79 million USD offer from Bayern for Diaz.

Barca's financial situation isn't entirely stable after the recent crisis. This summer, they finally paid off outstanding wages owed to former players from the Covid-19 period. Loaning Rashford, who is almost a year younger than Diaz, is the most logical choice.
