Arsenal signs Gyokeres

On 26/7, Arsenal completed their sixth summer signing, forward Viktor Gyokeres, for a total fee of USD 86 million from Sporting.

Arsenal paid a transfer fee of over USD 74 million, plus USD 11.5 million in add-ons depending on the Swedish striker's performance. Gyokeres signed a 5-year contract, earning a weekly salary of USD 175,000 at the Emirates Stadium, more than double the USD 85,000 he received at Sporting.

Gyokeres will wear the number 14 shirt at the Emirates. Previous Arsenal players to wear this number include Eddie Nketiah, Theo Walcott, former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and legend Thierry Henry.

"I feel this is the right club for me," Gyokeres said during his unveiling. "When I played against Arsenal last season, I really felt it was a very strong and difficult club to play against. That's what made me choose Arsenal, and of course the club's history and huge fan base. It's great to see all the support they've given me even before I arrived."

The 27-year-old striker referred to Sporting's 1-5 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League group stage in November 2024. After experiencing playing against Gabriel, William Saliba, and Arsenal's other defenders, Gyokeres believes training and playing alongside them will help elevate his career.

Gyokeres recalled, "Arsenal's defense is very solid, very difficult to create chances against. The team is also very good at set pieces and effective in front of goal, scoring 5 goals. I think Arsenal is a very good team, both offensively and defensively. It was a tough match."

Gyokeres has previously played in England, scoring 43 goals for Coventry in two and a half seasons in the Championship. He was with Brighton from 2018-2021 but never played in the Premier League. Now, he's ready to make his mark at Arsenal, especially alongside his talented new teammates.

"I always want to score goals," Gyokeres emphasized. "I'm really looking forward to scoring in front of the Arsenal fans. I started my career in England, it feels like a long time ago. I think I've improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove myself and give my all for the team."

Meanwhile, coach Mikel Arteta welcomed the USD 86 million signing to the Emirates. The Spanish coach praised Gyokeres for his consistent play, his many qualities, his sharpness with a high goal conversion rate, his intelligent movement in the box, and his constant threat.

Arsenal said Gyokeres will immediately join the squad for their Asian tour. However, he won't be available for the friendly against Newcastle in Singapore at 6:30 PM today, 27/7, Hanoi time. After that, the Gunners will travel to Hong Kong for a friendly against Tottenham on 31/7, before returning to London to face Villarreal on 6/8 and Bilbao on 9/8.

Gyokeres is Arsenal's sixth signing this summer, following Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, and Christian Norgaard. Arsenal has spent over USD 260 million on these deals and is still targeting Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig), and Anthony Gordon (Newcastle).
