Athlete falls short of silver at national athletics championships

Bui Thi Ngan fell and injured her shoulder in the final stretch of the women's 800m final at the 2025 National Athletics Championships.

The women's 800m race began at 7 a.m. on 13/8 at Hoa Xuan Stadium, with 7 athletes competing over two laps. Nguyen Khanh Ly (Da Nang) led the race, followed by Nguyen Thi Thu Ha and Bui Thi Ngan of Ninh Binh.

In the final 200m, Thu Ha pulled ahead to win the gold medal with a time of 2 minutes 12.37 seconds. Khanh Ly finished second in 2 minutes 13.41 seconds to take the silver.

The fall caused the Nam Dinh native to land on her shoulder, collapsing just beyond the finish line.

While vying for the silver medal, Bui Thi Ngan fell just before the finish line, coming in third with a time of 1 minute 13.44 seconds.

Born in 2001, Ngan is a rising star in Vietnamese athletics, with several achievements in middle-distance running, notably silver medals in the 800m and 1500m events at the 32nd SEA Games.

Medics immediately attended to Ngan. According to coach Thanh Xuan, the athlete only suffered pain and no fractures. She is likely to compete in the 4x800m relay later today.

In the men's 800m final, Dong Nai athletes Sam Van Doi (164) and Luong Duc Phuoc (161) battled fiercely to the finish line.

Van Doi edged ahead in the final meters to win gold in 1 minute 53.10 seconds. Phuoc finished second in 1 minute 53.18 seconds. The bronze medal went to Nguyen Minh Tri of Quang Ninh, who finished in 1 minute 53.68 seconds.

In the women's pole vault final, Da Nang athlete Nguyen Pham Hoai Yen won gold after clearing 3.9 meters. She then attempted 4 meters but was unsuccessful, falling short of the national record of 4.2 meters set by Le Thi Phuong in 2011.

After securing the gold medal, Yen ran to her mother, embracing her tearfully. She later received a bonus from the team leader.

Yen began as a high jumper, discovered in middle school. She developed her skills through city sports festivals and youth athletics competitions. After transitioning to pole vaulting, the 2001-born athlete quickly adapted and achieved significant success. At the 2020 National Championships, she won silver with a height of 3.6 meters.

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Yen is studying tourism and travel management at Duy Tan University in Da Nang. Her biggest dream is to become a tour guide, showcasing the natural beauty and historical sites of her country.

In the men's 10,000m final, Nguyen Trung Cuong (number 197) won gold in 31 minutes 41.68 seconds. This victory solidified his dominance in middle-distance running after his easy win in the 5,000m final on 10/8.

Nguyen Viet Ai (Army) took silver in 31 minutes 48.38 seconds, while Mai Qui Phong (Quang Tri) finished third in 31 minutes 49.18 seconds.

The national record for this event is 29 minutes 44.82 seconds, set by former Army athlete Nguyen Van Lai at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar.

The 2025 National Athletics Championships took place at Hoa Xuan Stadium in Da Nang from 9 to 13/8. The event serves as a selection trial for the Vietnamese athletics team participating in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand later this year.
