Group B consists of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Vietnam is considered the overwhelming favorite to win the group. Laos and Cambodia are therefore competing for the best second-place finish. Consequently, Tuesday's head-to-head match at Bekasi Stadium held significant importance for both teams.
Laos fielded several experienced national team players, including Damoth Thongkhamsavath and Peter Phanthavong. This experience gave them an initial edge, demonstrating cohesive teamwork and smooth coordination. Cambodia, however, applied considerable pressure with their energetic and physical style of play.
After 18 minutes of even play, Laos took the lead. Starting from a corner kick, their coordinated movements confused the Cambodian defense. Capitalizing on the opportunity, 18-year-old striker Phousomboun received the ball inside the penalty box, evaded a defender, and fired a low shot into the net to open the scoring for Laos.

After scoring, Laos continued to play well. In the 23rd minute, striker Thongkhamsavath used his skill and speed to dribble past several Cambodian players, but his shot went over the bar when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Thongkhamsavath played for Thanh Hoa last season but rarely saw action in the V-League.
Cambodia responded strongly, but their chances were limited. It wasn't until the 57th minute, through individual effort, that they found the equalizer. Midfielder Phat Sokha dribbled past several Lao players and unleashed a long-range shot from outside the penalty box. The ball curved into the far corner, leaving the Lao goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
Cambodia continued to press Laos with dangerous aerial balls. Soknet Hav, the tall striker who came on at the start of the second half, had two dangerous headers cleared off the goal line.
While focused on attacking, Cambodia nearly paid the price in the 79th minute. Lao striker Peeter Phanthavong broke through the defense, but his delayed finish allowed a defender to intervene.
With the draw, both teams still have a chance to advance. However, both Laos and Cambodia face upcoming matches against Vietnam.
The 2025 AFF U23 Championship takes place from 15/7 to 29/7 in Indonesia, featuring 10 teams divided into three groups. The teams play a round-robin format, with the top three group winners and the best second-placed team advancing to the semi-finals.
