Liverpool clinched the Premier League title last season with 84 points, a comfortable 10 points ahead of runners-up Arsenal. This summer, they have been the biggest spenders in the transfer market, splashing over 400 million USD to bolster their squad.
The reigning champions are still pursuing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, despite a hefty 200 million USD price tag. Isak's desire to join Anfield has led to him training separately and potentially missing Newcastle's opening match against Aston Villa this weekend.

When asked about Liverpool's chances of signing Isak, Carragher said, "I think it's possible, but I disagree that Liverpool will easily outpace other teams. It's not just about spending money and buying the best players; it's about team management, creating balance, and making the team function effectively." He cited Liverpool's loss to Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield as evidence that new signings Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Hugo Ekitike need time to integrate.
"History shows that success requires not only skilled players but also a balanced and efficient squad. Liverpool didn't achieve that last weekend," Carragher added. "I anticipate a tight title race with much discussion. The beauty of football, as we saw with Liverpool on Sunday, is that things aren't always perfect."
In contrast, Gary Neville believes Liverpool would be the title favorites with Isak. "Liverpool's convincing championship last year and impressive transfer window speak volumes," Neville shared at the Sky Sports Premier League launch. "If they secure Isak, who clearly wants to leave, they become the frontrunners. However, Man City, Arsenal, and Chelsea will exert more pressure than last season."

On 12/8, reports emerged that Isak refused to play for Newcastle again, even if a transfer falls through. The 25-year-old striker skipped Newcastle's pre-season tour, returning to train with his former club Real Sociedad. He has been training alone since returning to Newcastle's headquarters last week.
Isak reportedly vacated his Newcastle home to pressure the club's management. The Swedish striker has resided there since his 74 million USD transfer from Real Sociedad in 2022.
Paul Merson believes Isak had the chance to become a Newcastle legend, especially after contributing to their League Cup victory last season, ending a 70-year trophy drought. However, Merson criticized Isak's rebellious actions, claiming they damage his image and legacy at Newcastle.
"Liverpool understands the situation and knows Newcastle won't keep an unhappy player," Merson commented. "Isak's timing is interesting. He might have thought 160 million USD was acceptable. But Newcastle held firm, and now Isak clearly wants out of St James' Park. His actions forced the club's hand, leading to his declaration of not playing for Newcastle again."
