Chelsea's coaching staff held an emergency meeting on 15/1 to brief the entire team on basic hygiene practices, including a requirement for all members to wash their hands thoroughly before interacting with one another. This urgent measure aims to prevent further spread of a virus that has already impacted the squad.
The virus outbreak forced striker Liam Delap and winger Jamie Gittens to miss the 14/1 League Cup semi-final first leg loss to Arsenal due to high fever. Both players are currently recovering at home and are likely to miss Chelsea's Premier League match against Brentford on 17/1. In addition to Delap and Gittens, several other first-team staff members also fell ill on the night of 14/1.
"The medical team is working to contain the outbreak, as some of our staff have also contracted the illness," Coach Rosenior stated at a press conference on 15/1. He emphasized the importance of the new protocols: "We held a team meeting to remind players about handwashing and other basic personal hygiene practices. This is crucial for controlling the situation. Chelsea is entering a busy period of matches, and the team needs all members to be healthy and ready."

The current virus outbreak poses a significant challenge for Rosenior, who took charge of Chelsea in early 1/2026, as the team navigates an intense period of fixtures. From now until mid-2/2026, his squad will play 9 consecutive matches across the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and the second leg of the League Cup semi-final.
Amid these challenges, the recovery of Reece James and Cole Palmer from injuries provides some relief for the new English coach. The key duo missed the loss to Arsenal due to hip and thigh issues but could feature against Brentford on 17/1. "Both trained again starting today," Rosenior announced. "We will reassess the situation after the training session to ensure they pass all medical checks. If James and Palmer return to the squad, that will be very good news, and currently, the likelihood is high."
