Coach Flick: 'Next year is the Champions League'

After securing the La Liga title for the second consecutive season, coach Hansi Flick expressed deep gratitude for the affection shown by FC Barcelona and its fans, affirming his ambition to win the Champions League next season.

"This morning, my mother called to inform me of my father's passing, and I debated whether to share it or keep it private from the team," the German tactician shared emotionally in the press conference following the 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in round 35, which clinched the La Liga 2025-2026 championship. "Ultimately, this place feels like a family, and I wanted to share it with them. I will never forget how the entire team reacted. I am very happy and grateful to work for this club. The next goal is to reach the 100-point milestone in La Liga, and next season, we will strive for the Champions League, as that is the desire of all our fans."

This El Clasico held immense emotion for Flick. Hours before kickoff, he received news of his father's death, yet he suppressed his grief and chose to stay, standing by Barca in the pivotal match. His players responded fully, first with an on-field tribute, and after securing the championship, they tossed Flick into the air in the center circle of Camp Nou.

"I will never forget today and the special emotions it brought," Flick continued. "I want to thank the entire team, President Joan Laporta, Vice President Rafa Yuste, Sporting Director Deco, and everyone who supported us. Thank you to the players for their resilient fighting spirit throughout the 90 minutes. It is great to win the title in an El Clasico, as Real is a significant opponent."

The 61-year-old coach repeatedly used the word "family" both during the post-match celebration and with the media. Flick affirmed his desire to continue with Barca and contribute more, reciprocating the affection of the club and its fans.

"I am proud that everyone feels part of this glory and shares a strong connection," Flick said. "Since my first day here, I have had a positive mindset that I would lead a major team and win titles. I always dreamt of that goal and fought for it. Since arriving in this city, everyone has welcomed me and my family with kindness. I deeply appreciate it and am very happy."

Since their defeat in the first El Clasico at Santiago Bernabeu, Barca has only lost two more matches, against Real Sociedad and Girona. Currently, with 91 points, if they win all three remaining matches against Alaves, Betis, and Valencia, they will reach the 100-point mark – a historical record held by Tito Vilanova's Barca in the 2012-2013 season and Jose Mourinho's Real in the 2011-2012 season.

Under Flick, Barca has won five domestic titles: two La Liga championships, two Spanish Super Cups, and one Copa del Rey. The coach born in 1965's statements suggest he will sign a new contract with Barca until 2028, with an option to extend until 2029.

Real head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, in a heavy mood in the post-match press conference, congratulated his arch-rivals. He also sent a message to the fans: "We cannot say much right now. We understand the disappointment and frustration of the fans with this season. The team needs to review our mistakes. We have bounced back many times before. We understand your anger; we feel the same way. The team must not give up in the three remaining matches. We fight for something greater than personal prestige; we fight to defend this badge."

Arbeloa also faced repeated questions about Kylian Mbappe, who watched the match from his home in Madrid and posted on his personal Instagram – a picture of his TV screen showing the match when the score was 2-0 to Barca, with the caption "Hala Madrid". "I do not know if he will play any more matches this season," Arbeloa replied. "There are still two weeks, depending on the progress of his injury recovery." When pressed further on whether he wanted the French star to accompany the team to Barcelona to boost morale, Arbeloa evaded the question: "What I want is for him to be 100% fit and start the match."
