The KFA confirmed on 6/8 that Shin resigned two days prior. He cited the inability to effectively manage both roles after accepting the Ulsan Hyundai position.
Shin was appointed as the KFA's vice president in charge of the national team's external affairs in early April. The 1970-born coach was among 27 individuals selected for the 55th Executive Committee, under the leadership of President Chung Mong-gyu. The vice president position has five members, including Shin and Park Hang-seo, who also supports the national team.

Shin returns to coaching after eight months following his dismissal by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). He will make his debut when Ulsan Hyundai faces Jeju United in the 25th round of K-League 1 on Tuesday. This marks the end of Shin's 4,634-day absence from the South Korean top league.
Ulsan Hyundai has won the K-League 1 five times, including three consecutive titles in 2022, 2023, and 2024. However, they are currently ranked 7th after 24 matches this season with 31 points, having not won their last 10 matches across all competitions. The club's management decided to dismiss coach Kim Pan-gon, hoping to salvage the situation in the remaining eight rounds.
In South Korea, Shin earned the nickname "Fox on the Field" during his playing career. He played 405 matches for Seongnam FC, winning six K-League titles. Shin also scored 102 goals and provided 69 assists, becoming the first K-League player to reach 60 goals and 60 assists in 2003.
After retiring, he coached Seongnam FC from 2009 to 2012. A year later, the team won the AFC Champions League, Asia's most prestigious club competition. Shin's K-League 1 coaching record stands at 58 wins, 42 draws, and 53 losses.
At the national team level, Shin led South Korea at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 U20 World Cup. At the 2018 World Cup, his South Korean team was eliminated in the group stage but made a mark by defeating defending champions Germany 2-0 in the final match.
From 2019 to 2024, Shin coached Indonesia. Initially, his team was overshadowed by Vietnam under coach Park Hang-seo. However, a policy of naturalizing players of mixed heritage helped Indonesia transform and achieve several successes, including their first-ever Asian Cup group stage qualification in 2023, their first appearance in the third round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and reaching the semifinals of the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup.
