Conor McGregor's controversies

Alongside a celebrated UFC career, Conor McGregor has been consistently entangled in legal troubles, from bar brawls and disruptions at sporting events to a shocking rape allegation.

Repeated traffic violations since 2017. In 2017 and 2018, McGregor was repeatedly accused of speeding in Ireland. He pleaded guilty and was fined in both cases. The 2018 incident resulted in a six-month driving ban, making him the target of criticism in his homeland.

In 2022, McGregor was arrested in Dublin on six traffic charges, including driving without insurance, driving without a valid license, using an unregistered vehicle, and reckless driving. His $200,000 Bentley Continental GT supercar was confiscated at the scene.

On 31/7/2024, the Blanchardstown District Court (Dublin) handed McGregor a five-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving. The fighter was also fined over $5,000, banned from driving for two years, and fined an additional $1,000 for careless driving on the M50 motorway.

Attacking a UFC bus and arrest in New York. In April 2018, following a UFC 223 media event in Brooklyn, McGregor appeared backstage with a group and attacked a bus carrying fighters. Camera footage showed him throwing a metal dolly at a window, shattering the glass and injuring some fighters with shards. Two of them, Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg, had to withdraw from upcoming matches due to facial and eye injuries.

The main target of the attack was Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was on the bus. A few days earlier, Khabib had an altercation with Artem Lobov, McGregor's close friend and longtime teammate, at a UFC hotel. McGregor reportedly flew from Ireland to the US to confront his rival, but the situation quickly escalated.

UFC President Dana White criticized McGregor, calling it "disgusting and unacceptable behavior" that seriously damaged the image of the league. Several UFC 223 matches had to be changed or cancelled, resulting in significant financial and reputational damage for both the organizers and the fighters involved.

After the incident, McGregor surrendered to the New York Police Department and was charged with multiple offenses, including assault and felony criminal mischief.

By July 2018, he reached a plea deal. McGregor avoided jail time, his visa remained unaffected, and the serious criminal charges were dropped. He only had to pay restitution, perform five days of community service, and complete a short anger management course.

McGregor snatches and smashes a fan's phone.

Smashing a fan's phone. The incident occurred outside a hotel in Miami Beach in March 2019. A man approached and tried to take a picture of McGregor with his phone. Security footage shows McGregor grabbing the device, throwing it to the ground, and stomping on it before leaving. He was arrested a few hours later and charged with strong-arm robbery and criminal mischief.

McGregor was detained for a few hours before being released on $5,000 bail. His lawyer said McGregor pledged full cooperation with the investigation and "looks forward to having this matter resolved amicably."

Just one month later, the fan dropped the civil lawsuit, stating that the two sides had reached an out-of-court settlement. The Florida State Attorney's Office subsequently announced it would not pursue criminal charges, closing one of McGregor's controversial incidents in 2019.

Punching an elderly man in a bar. This occurred in August 2019 at a pub in Dublin. Security footage shows McGregor offering a group of patrons a shot of Proper No. Twelve whiskey, his own brand. One man repeatedly refused, and after being ignored several times, McGregor suddenly punched him in the face, causing a commotion.

In November 2019, McGregor pleaded guilty to assault in a Dublin court. He was fined instead of imprisoned, though the offense could have resulted in a six-month sentence. The victim also received an undisclosed private settlement.

At the hearing, McGregor's criminal record was revealed, showing 18 prior convictions, mostly traffic violations. His lawyer argued that a criminal conviction could threaten his career, as he needed to travel freely for international competitions. The court ultimately decided on a financial penalty instead of a custodial sentence.

Accused of indecent exposure in a bar. This incident took place during McGregor's vacation in Corsica, southern France, in September 2020. Local media reported he was accused of indecent exposure and sexually harassing a woman at a beach bar. McGregor was subsequently questioned by police and detained for 48 hours.

During his detention, police took DNA samples and interrogated McGregor for several hours to verify statements from both sides. A spokesperson for the UFC fighter stated that McGregor "vigorously denies any wrongdoing" and fully cooperated with authorities.

Eight months later, French authorities announced there was insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges against McGregor. According to his representatives, DNA test results corroborated his statements, clearing him of the allegations. Although the case closed without formal charges, it marked another controversial legal issue in the Irish fighter's personal life.

Accused of breaking a famous DJ's nose in Rome. In October 2021, Italian DJ and TV presenter Francesco Facchinetti accused McGregor of punching him in the face and breaking his nose outside a hotel in Rome.

According to Facchinetti, he and his wife had spent several hours partying with McGregor and his fiancee Dee Devlin in Rome. Both parties appeared friendly, with no apparent conflict. However, as they were leaving, McGregor allegedly approached and punched Facchinetti in the face, knocking him back and breaking his nose. The attack was described as unprovoked.

Rome police launched an investigation, but McGregor was not charged. He has not publicly commented on the incident.

Accused of assaulting a woman on a yacht in Ibiza. A woman in her 40s accused McGregor of attacking her on his private yacht during his birthday party in Ibiza, Spain, in July 2022. The incident only came to light in early 2023 after the victim reported it to Irish police.

The woman claimed that while attending McGregor's birthday party with friends, the Irish fighter suddenly became aggressive. She accused him of verbally abusing and punching her in the stomach and face, then threatening to drown her, forcing her to jump off the yacht in fear. She was rescued by a Spanish Red Cross boat. The victim reported a broken wrist and severe emotional trauma, believing she "could have been killed" had she not escaped.

Initially, the woman did not file a formal complaint in Spain. In September 2022, she filed a complaint with Irish police, leading Spanish police to reopen the investigation. In addition to criminal charges, she also filed a civil lawsuit against McGregor seeking damages. However, in February 2023, she withdrew the lawsuit without explanation.

Loses sexual assault appeal. On July 31st, the Irish Court of Appeal dismissed all of McGregor's appeals in a civil case related to the 2018 rape allegation by Nikita Hand (pictured below).

McGregor will have to fulfill his civil obligations as per the November 2024 ruling, including paying the plaintiff approximately $257,000 in damages and nearly $1.5 million in legal fees. McGregor is also responsible for subsequent costs incurred after the appeal.

Infidelity scandal. On July 11th, McGregor was spotted being intimate with a dark-haired woman on Fort Lauderdale beach, Florida. On July 13th, the day before his 37th birthday, he was seen having dinner with the same woman at Padrino’s Cuban restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Around the same time, American rapper Azealia Banks posted two explicit photos allegedly of a naked McGregor posing in front of a mirror, which she claimed he sent her via direct message on X, despite her not following him. She also publicly shared blurred messages and called McGregor's behavior "disgusting."

These recent scandals have brought attention to McGregor's long-term relationship with his girlfriend Dee Devlin. They began dating in 2008 when McGregor was an unknown plumber in Dublin.

They have four children: Conor Jr. (born 2017), Croia (2019), Rian (2021), and Mio (2023). They got engaged in 2020 but haven't officially married.
