Cora Schumacher refuses to give up famous surname

German TV presenter Cora Schumacher has declared she will not relinquish her married name, even after her ex-husband Ralf Schumacher came out as gay.

"Why should I give up this name?" Cora said in an interview with German newspaper Bild. "It would be stupid of me to do so. I'll keep this surname as long as I can make money from it."

Ralf Schumacher, brother of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, and Cora married in 2001. They separated in 2009 and finalized their divorce in 2015. They share a son, David Schumacher, who is also pursuing a racing career.

In 2024, Ralf surprised the public by announcing his relationship with French politician Etienne Bousquet-Cassagne.

Following the news, Cora revealed she sought therapy to cope with the shock. The German model and TV presenter admitted to being unaware of Ralf's sexuality during their marriage.

"I didn't know," Cora added. "If I had known, I wouldn't have married him. I wouldn't trade my life, no matter how much money, and my best years for that."

Ralf Schumacher publicly announced his relationship with French politician Etienne Bousquet-Cassagne.

Almost a decade after their separation, Cora Schumacher's name remains linked to the famous racing family. Her post-divorce relationship with Ralf has frequently made headlines, often with controversial details. The German media has described their story as a "never-ending novel."

Cora's recent statement about keeping the "Schumacher" name has sparked further debate. Some criticize her for exploiting the family's fame for personal gain. However, Cora has defended her decision, stating it's entirely reasonable, and she will continue to do so if it benefits her.

Ralf Schumacher competed in Formula 1 from 1997 to 2007. He began his career with Jordan before reaching his peak with Williams, where he achieved six race wins and 27 podium finishes. His best championship result was 4th overall in 2001 and 2002.

After leaving F1, Ralf raced in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) for a few seasons before transitioning to sports commentary and motorsport consulting. He currently supports his 23-year-old son, David Schumacher, who competes in lower-level racing series in Europe.

Since coming out, Ralf has emphasized his desire for transparency about his partner and to live a normal life, rather than making a political statement. He also admitted he didn't anticipate the level of media attention and expressed gratitude for the respectful response from the F1 community.

Ralf's brother, Michael Schumacher, competed in Formula 1 from 1991 to 2012. He and Lewis Hamilton share the record of seven Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship titles, won in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Michael Schumacher has not been seen in public since a December 2013 skiing accident in the French Alps resulted in a severe, near-fatal brain injury. He is currently receiving specialized care at home. His family remains hopeful for his recovery but has released little information about his condition.
