Diogo Jota’s lifelong love story

Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso shared a 13-year love story, culminating in their marriage on 22/6. Tragically, Jota died in a car accident less than two weeks later.

Jota and Cardoso first met in 2012 as 13-year-old classmates in Porto, Portugal.

Cardoso has been by Jota's side since the beginning of his career. Their love grew over the years, resulting in three children: two boys and one girl.

Cardoso proudly shared a local newspaper clipping featuring Jota playing, posting it on social media with the caption "Que lindinho!" ("How cute!").

Jota's career took a significant turn when he joined the English Championship team, Wolves, on loan in 2017. After he scored 18 goals during the 2017-2018 season, Wolves paid $15 million to Atletico to sign him permanently.

Cardoso joined Jota as he embarked on his new life in England. The couple celebrated Wolves' Championship title win and promotion to the Premier League in the 2017-2018 season.

Jota reached new heights when he signed with Liverpool in 2020 for $58 million. He made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.

Cardoso continued to support Jota, often sharing photos of herself and their children attending his matches at Anfield. The family celebrated Liverpool's Premier League title win during the 2024-2025 season at Anfield.

Jota and Cardoso got engaged in July 2022, marking a decade of their relationship. They married on 22/6/2025 after 13 years together.

On 1/7, Cardoso posted a wedding video on Instagram, captioning it "The day we will never forget." Jota commented, "But I'm the lucky one."

Tragedy struck two days later when Jota and his younger brother, Andre da Silva, died in a car accident. On 4/7, international media published photos of a distraught Cardoso leaving the morgue, needing assistance to walk.

Jota and Silva's bodies were returned to Portugal. A viewing was held on Friday afternoon in Lisbon at the Sao Cosme Funeral Home, a 30-minute drive from their hometown of Porto in northern Portugal. The funeral service took place on Saturday morning at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar Catholic Church.

The accident occurred on 3/7 on a bend in the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, western Spain. Jota and Silva's car suffered a tire blowout, causing it to lose control, roll over several times, and catch fire. Emergency services responded immediately, but both brothers died at the scene.

Silva was also a footballer, playing as an attacking midfielder. He played for several youth clubs, including Gondomar, Porto, Padroense, Pacos de Ferreira, Famalicao, and Boavista. He began his professional career in 2021, playing for two seasons with the fourth-division club Gondomar and was recently signed by second-division club Penafiel.

Porto, where Jota played on loan during the 2016-2017 season and where Silva played in the youth teams, was among the first clubs to express their condolences, paying tribute to the two footballers.
