Dortmund substitutes watch first half from locker room

Dortmund's substitutes stayed in the locker room during the first half to avoid the heat, as their team defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 in their second group F match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Dortmund posted a photo on X of their substitutes watching the first half on TV from the locker room with the message, "This has never happened before, but in this heat, it makes perfect sense,".

In the second half, the substitutes returned to the bench, equipped with umbrellas and cold towels to combat the high temperatures.

The match between Dortmund and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) took place at TQL Stadium in Ohio at 12 p.m. Washington time on 21/6, with temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius.

Before the match, coach Niko Kovac compared the temperature in the US to a sauna. He noted that the substitutes' bench lacked shade and advised the media to bring sunscreen, hats, and water.

"I'm sweating as if I just stepped out of a sauna," the Croatian coach said. "It’s tough for both teams, but our opponents are more accustomed to this weather. It's difficult for us to perform at our best,".

Several other teams have also complained about the playing conditions in the US, especially during midday or early afternoon matches. Midfielder Marcos Llorente reported sore toenails due to the heat after Atletico's match against PSG on 15/6.

At TQL Stadium, Mamelodi Sundowns took a surprising lead in the 11th minute thanks to Lucas Ribeiro Costa. However, goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham (Jude Bellingham's younger brother), and an own goal from Khuliso Mudau gave Dortmund a 4-1 lead. Mamelodi Sundowns managed two late goals but ultimately lost.

In the final group stage matches on 25/6, Dortmund will face Ulsan Hyundai (South Korea), while Mamelodi Sundowns will play against Fluminense (Brazil).
