Famous brothers who faced off on the football pitch

Despite sharing the same blood, brothers like the Boatengs, Xhakas, Ferdinands, and Pogbas have faced each other on opposing teams, creating emotionally charged and professionally compelling matches.

Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng made history as the first brothers to play against each other at a World Cup. During the 2010 group stage, Germany, with Jerome, defeated Kevin-Prince's Ghana 1-0 thanks to a goal by Mesut Ozil.

The two teams met again in the 2014 World Cup group stage, drawing 2-2. While Kevin-Prince's Ghana was eliminated, Jerome and Germany went on to win the tournament. Beyond the World Cup, the Boateng brothers also faced each other several times in the Bundesliga, with Jerome playing for Bayern Munich and Kevin-Prince for Schalke 04.

Kolo and Yaya Toure, the former a renowned center-back for Arsenal and Liverpool and the latter a famous midfielder for Barcelona and Manchester City, were teammates at Manchester City for three successful seasons before Kolo moved to Liverpool in 2013.

Their first encounter as opponents was on 1/3/2015 at Anfield, with Yaya starting for Man City and Kolo coming off the bench in the 83rd minute. Liverpool won 2-1 with goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho. The Toure brothers met again in the 2016 League Cup final. Yaya started, while Kolo substituted for Mamadou Sakho. Man City drew 1-1 with Liverpool and won 3-1 on penalties, with Yaya scoring the decisive penalty.

Florentin and Paul Pogba clashed when Man Utd played Saint-Etienne in the first leg of the 2017 Europa League round of 32. This special event took place at Old Trafford, with their mother wearing a half-and-half jersey in the stands. Both Florentin and Paul started in both legs. Man Utd won the first leg 3-0 with a Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick and the second leg 1-0 thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Granit and Taulant Xhaka, born in Basel, Switzerland, to a Kosovan-Albanian family, played together for Basel's youth team but chose different national teams. Granit opted for Switzerland, while Taulant chose Albania, their family's homeland.

On 11/6/2016, during Euro 2016, Switzerland faced Albania in Lens. This marked the first time in the tournament's history that brothers played for opposing teams in a match. Switzerland won 1-0 with a goal by Fabian Schar, and Granit was named man of the match.

Gary and Phil Neville grew up and started their careers together at Man Utd, becoming icons of the Class of '92. After Phil joined Everton in 2005 for more playing time, they became rivals, facing each other five times in the Premier League. Their most memorable encounter was on 20/2/2010, when Everton defeated Man Utd 3-1 at Goodison Park. The media highlighted Gary not greeting Phil in the tunnel before the match, only nodding when the camera turned to them. Phil later expressed annoyance, calling Gary a "fool," though they later reconciled.

Thiago and Rafinha Alcantara, sons of former Brazilian player Mazinho, developed their talents at La Masia. However, their careers took different paths: Thiago chose to play for Spain, while Rafinha represented Brazil. The brothers faced each other once, in the first leg of the 2014-2015 Champions League semi-final, with Thiago playing for Bayern Munich and Rafinha coming off the bench for Barcelona. Thiago emphasized his affection for Rafinha, stating, "Wherever you are, you're still my closest family member," particularly as they both endured injury rehabilitation.

Rio and Anton Ferdinand, both born and raised in Peckham, southeast London, pursued professional football careers after training at West Ham's academy. Their careers diverged: Rio became a legend at Man Utd and the England national team, while Anton primarily played for mid-tier clubs like West Ham, Sunderland, and QPR.

The Ferdinand brothers faced off seven times in the Premier League between 2005 and 2012. Rio won four matches, while Anton defeated his older brother three times. Despite comparisons to his famous brother, Anton always showed respect and pride. "Without Rio as a role model, I might have gone astray in life," Anton expressed. Rio reciprocated by defending his brother, especially during the 2011 racial abuse incident with John Terry, which strained Rio's relationship with Terry.

Michael and Will Keane developed at Man Utd's academy but couldn't secure first-team spots. They pursued separate career paths but left a unique mark on the Premier League. On 26/9/2016, they became the first twins to play against each other in the Premier League, when Burnley hosted Hull City at Turf Moor. Michael was a key center-back for Burnley, while Will was a substitute striker for Hull.

Like the Xhaka brothers, Michael and Will chose different national teams. Michael represented England under Gareth Southgate, while Will, unable to secure a spot on the England team, opted for the Republic of Ireland.
