Federer: "If I had only won 10 grand slams, I would still be just as proud"

Legend Roger Federer returns to the Australian Open for the first time in four years, stating that the number of grand slams is not what makes him happiest.

"If I had only achieved half the victories I have, I would still be just as proud because I would have achieved more than I ever thought possible," Federer said at a press conference in Melbourne on 15/1, ahead of his exhibition doubles match on the opening day of the Australian Open this weekend.

Federer will partner with local legend Lleyton Hewitt, facing the pair of Patrick Rafter and Andre Agassi on 18/1. He noted that while tennis remains important, his longing for his peak playing days is not as strong as many might assume.

Discussing his life after retirement, Federer added, "Recently, we had the idea of playing an exhibition match with Rafael Nadal to thank the fans. But honestly, with four children, I cannot prioritize my schedule for tennis like before; there are too many other things to worry about. I am happy to remain active, busy, and participate in many sports. I have played golf a few times with Nadal and often play tennis."

Federer previously played an exhibition match at the Shanghai Masters last year. He stated he would prioritize playing doubles whenever invited, as his physical condition no longer allows for singles play. "I am truly proud and happy to be back in Australia and to meet so many former colleagues and friends," he said. "I still follow tennis, check tournament results, or watch on television if I have time."

Federer cited the 2017 Australian Open final against Nadal as his most memorable match in Australia. At 35, he had not played a grand slam match in six months and entered the tournament with low expectations, yet ultimately won. "That year, my goal was to reach the quarterfinals," the 44-year-old legend recalled. "My two coaches at the time, Luthi and Ljubicic, told me I could do it, but I did not believe them. I thought, I am ranked 17th in the world and have not played in six months, so winning is impossible."

Regarding this year's tournament, Federer predicts that Alcaraz and Sinner will continue to showcase their strength as they are in a period of ascent. He commented: "Their rivalry in many recent major tournaments has been exciting. Especially the extraordinary Roland Garros final. The match should have ended very early for Sinner, but then things unfolded in a crazy way. That was probably one of the best tennis matches, and both of them are still showing improvement. I have practiced with them a bit, and both are excellent."

Federer also suggested that it would not be surprising if Sinner achieved a hat-trick of titles or if Alcaraz became the youngest player to complete a major collection. "In Alcaraz's case, I think it is just a psychological issue, similar to Rory McIlroy aiming to win The Masters. I hope he succeeds, but I am sure there are hundreds of players who will try to stop him."

According to the Australian Open draw, Sinner could face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, while Alcaraz is set to play Alexander Zverev. Sinner and Alcaraz have dominated grand slams for the past two years, and historically, no duo has achieved that for three consecutive years.
