Last year, Federer also appeared at the Shanghai Masters for a similar event. He shared the court with tennis player Zhang Zhizhen, table tennis star Fan Zhendong, and singer Eason Chan.
Federer's return to center court at the Qizhong Stadium promises to be one of the most anticipated events at the 2025 Shanghai Masters. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has rarely participated in exhibition matches or similar events since his retirement. Federer's last official match was at the 2022 Laver Cup, where he partnered with Rafael Nadal in his farewell match.
"Honestly, I want to play a little again. I haven't picked up a racket much after retiring because I wanted to give my body and mind a break. I miss tennis," Federer told L’Equipe and TNT Sports in 4/2024. "I will start training again, about two to three times a week. I hope to be in good shape and return to the court for exhibition events."
Federer last played at the Shanghai Masters in 2019, losing to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. His best results at the tournament are two championships in 2014 and 2017. The former Swiss player was also runner-up in 2010 after losing the final to Andy Murray.
