Fernandes' brace secures Man Utd victory

Captain Bruno Fernandes scored twice to lead Man Utd to a 2-1 win over West Ham in a preseason friendly in the US.

At MetLife Stadium, New Jersey on 26/7, Man Utd opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Following a Man Utd free kick, goalkeeper Alphonse Areola caught the ball but collided with a teammate, spilling it. Areola then fouled Ayden Heaven while attempting to recover the ball, resulting in a penalty for Man Utd.

Fernandes converted the penalty with a low shot to the left corner, sending the West Ham goalkeeper the wrong way.

Early in the second half, the Portuguese midfielder completed his brace, again capitalizing on an error by Areola. The French goalkeeper played a weak pass into midfield, which was intercepted by Patrick Dorgu and passed to Fernandes. The 30-year-old midfielder then placed a shot into the far corner, leaving Areola rooted to the spot.

Fernandes could have had a hat-trick had he taken another chance. In the 49th minute, he dispossessed center-back Max Kilman, entered the box, and unleashed a diagonal shot that was blocked by the West Ham goalkeeper's foot.

The match at MetLife showcased an energetic performance from Man Utd's attack, particularly in the first half. They kicked off and created their first opportunity within the first minute. Rasmus Hojlund broke free from Kilman but his powerful shot towards the near post hit the woodwork. In the 38th minute, Amad Diallo curled a shot towards the far corner that found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Both of Man Utd's new signings were included in the US tour squad, but only Matheus Cunha started. The Brazilian player has yet to fully integrate with his new club, his only notable contribution being a shot from outside the box that was saved by Areola in the 18th minute.

Meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo did not play. Manager Ruben Amorim explained that Mbeumo joined the squad a week later than his new teammates and was not yet in optimal condition. The forward will also miss the match against Bournemouth at 8:30 AM on 31/7 Hanoi time, and is only expected to make his debut in the final game in the US against Everton at 4 AM on 4/8.

Lineups:

Man Utd: Bayindir; Yoro (Fredricson 66), De Ligt (Maguire 66), Heaven (Shaw 66); Amad (Dalot 66), Mainoo (Collyer 66), Ugarte (Casemiro 66), Dorgu (Leon 66); Fernandes (c) (J. Fletcher 66), Cunha (Mount 66); Hojlund (Obi 66).
