Five French police officers tasked with protecting the national soccer team received money from Kylian Mbappe in 2023, according to Le Canard Enchaine, a French satirical investigative publication. Four officers each received a check for $35,000 from a bank account in the name of the national team captain. The remaining officer, the commander, received $70,000.
The French National Police Inspectorate General opened an administrative inquiry into the donation to determine whether the officers were required to declare it. Mbappe is not held responsible.

Mbappe, through his representative, responded to Le Canard Enchaine's article. The 26-year-old striker stated he has always donated his entire bonus since joining the French national team. He donated his 2022 World Cup bonus to several associations and the police unit that accompanied the team, based on transparency, fairness, and recognition of their efforts.
According to Mbappe, the police unit did not receive World Cup bonuses like other support staff, including for the trip to Cameroon. The donation expressed his gratitude for their loyalty and dedication. He believes the relationship between players and security personnel deserves recognition.
Mbappe also consulted a tax lawyer, who confirmed the recipients were not obligated to declare the donation.
Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final, where France tied with Argentina 3-3 after extra time and lost 4-2 on penalties. The 26-year-old also won the Golden Boot with eight goals. He previously scored four goals and helped France win the 2018 World Cup.
