Man City brought 27 players to the US for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, including four new signings: Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Marcus Bettinelli. Midfielder Mateo Kovacic also joined, having recovered from a heel injury.
Kevin de Bruyne left on a free transfer, while Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Kalvin Phillips, and James McAtee were among the absent players. At the end of the 2024-2025 Premier League season, Guardiola threatened to leave Man City if he had to work with an oversized squad.

In a press conference before the match against Al Ain in the second round of Group G of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the Spanish manager reiterated the need for Man City to reduce their squad size.
"I'd love to have all these players for the entire season," Guardiola said. "I have no complaints about any of them. The problem is they won't be happy throughout the season. They'll be sad and disappointed. It's not a problem for me, as I have more options. But I don't like having 6 or 7 players sitting out, assuming no injuries. We still have time until the transfer window closes."
Guardiola typically prefers a 23-player squad, comprising 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers. This means at least three of the players Man City brought to the US will need to leave before the Premier League starts in August, unless the team brings in more reinforcements.
According to ESPN, Man City may soon part ways with Ilkay Gundogan, who is being pursued by Galatasaray. The German midfielder has one year left on his contract and faces stiff competition for his position with the return of current Ballon d'Or winner Rodri and the arrival of Reijnders from Milan.
Guardiola said he hasn't spoken to Gundogan about his future. "We currently have a very large squad, with 26 or 27 players. Many won't get to play, and gradually some players may leave. But for now, Gundogan is absolutely in my and the team's plans," the 54-year-old manager said.
The FIFA Club World Cup has seen several surprises, such as reigning Champions League winners PSG losing 0-1 to Botafogo, Chelsea losing 1-3 to Flamengo, and Real Madrid and Inter Milan dropping points. Guardiola wasn't surprised to see clubs from around the world challenging European teams and said he enjoys the clashes of different playing styles and football cultures at the tournament.
