Gyokeres: 'I'll return to the Premier League for revenge'

In an interview with France Football on 12/7, striker Viktor Gyokeres, currently sought after by Arsenal, expressed his desire to return to the Premier League to prove himself after a previous unsuccessful experience in the league.

At 25, Gyokeres is still a relatively unknown name, while future stars are often discovered much earlier. He attributes this to rediscovering the joy of playing like a child, focusing on the game and not overanalyzing. This shift allowed his passion for scoring goals to become central to his playing style.

Gyokeres, a lifelong striker, idolizes Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He vividly remembers his first goal, scored in a Stockholm tournament as a child. He describes growing up in Stockholm, where his life revolved around football, attending a football academy from the age of 10.

Gyokeres stayed with his hometown club IFK Aspudden-Tellus until he was 15, believing the experience of leading a smaller team developed him differently. He credits his parents, particularly his father, Stefan, who was also his coach, for fostering his love of the game.

At 19, Gyokeres joined Brighton in England but spent three and a half years on loan without a Premier League appearance. He reflects on this period as a challenging but valuable learning experience, adapting to a new culture and understanding the realities of professional football.

Despite setbacks, Gyokeres maintained his ambition. Signing with Coventry in the summer of 2021 marked a turning point. He felt a sense of belonging and a renewed confidence, fueled by the club's belief in his potential.

Gyokeres emphasizes the importance of confidence for a striker, allowing instinct to take over. He clarifies that he is right-footed, though increasingly uses his left foot as well. He acknowledges the influence of various coaches, especially those at Brommapojkarna and Coventry's Mark Robins.

His signature goal celebration, interlacing his fingers in front of his mouth like a mask, originated during the 2022 World Cup. Friends suggested he adopt a unique style, and the celebration stuck. He playfully hints at its connection to the Batman villain Bane but prefers to keep its meaning a secret.

Gyokeres acknowledges that recognition comes with goals. He believes he has reached a new level, crediting Sporting Lisbon and coach Ruben Amorim for his development. He expresses understanding for Amorim's mid-season move to Man Utd in November 2024, despite the initial shock.

Winning a second consecutive league title with Sporting, their first in 71 years, was a highlight for Gyokeres. He scored the decisive goal in the final match against Guimaraes. He dismisses those who downplay his achievements due to the perceived lower quality of the Portuguese league, emphasizing its technical prowess.

Gyokeres describes his Champions League experience as exceeding all expectations. He relished the competition and scored a hat-trick against Man City on 5/11/2024. He was particularly impressed by English players like Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, and Bukayo Saka.

He prepares for matches by studying opponents but believes he performs best when playing instinctively. He reveals his pre-match ritual of showering just before arriving at the stadium.

Among his many nicknames, Gyokeres prefers "The Machine" or "Machine". He acknowledges the pros and cons of fame, emphasizing the importance of staying grounded. Outside football, he enjoys spending time with loved ones, playing golf, and living near the beach in Lisbon.

Gyokeres explains his decision to stay with Sporting through the past summer and winter transfer windows, citing fitness issues and the club's desire to keep him. He remains open to a move this summer, prioritizing a club that truly wants him.

He confirms his interest in returning to the Premier League, viewing it as a chance for revenge. His career goals include winning the Champions League and representing Sweden in major tournaments. He praises his national teammate Alexander Isak, highlighting their strong partnership.

Gyokeres confidently places himself among the world's top strikers, including Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, and Erling Haaland, believing he can replicate his Sporting form anywhere. He assures readers they haven't seen the best of him yet.
