Speaking on CBS Sports' Golazo program, Henry suggested that Alonso focused too much on mere "coaching" for some players, while not "managing" them effectively enough.
"Both Barca and Real possess the best players in the world, but Barca is where coaches are made", Henry, who played for Barca for three years, stated, clarifying his perspective. "They have a distinct playing identity that must be absolutely respected by both the club and the fans. If you do not fit that philosophy, you have no chance of staying. But at Real, the approach is entirely different. As President Florentino Perez once said: 90% of the power belongs to the players; the coach accounts for only 10%. You must understand that you are there to let the players steer the ship".

During his time at Barca, Henry worked under Pep Guardiola. From the French former striker's viewpoint, the Catalan coach was one of the rare individuals who excelled in both aspects: player management and tactical coaching.
"Some coaches simply let players be themselves", Henry added. "At big clubs, you cannot force superstars to be present for breakfast at 8 AM just to listen to your tactical explanations. They will tell you directly: 'I bring you the Champions League trophy, but not at 8 AM'. What is the point of confronting them then? The ultimate goal is victory, not losing player trust. I have been a coach, so I understand that you will always lose that power struggle".
"Sometimes the coach's ego and tactical vision might emerge", Henry continued. "But you have to ask yourself: What is the ultimate goal? It is to make that star player shine brightest tonight. If a key star is late for breakfast or a tactical meeting, what will you do? If he is late for a meeting, he will not be allowed into the room, but you will not punish him by dropping him from the starting lineup. Because I need to win! As a coach, you need to win matches and must not lose the support of the squad".

Henry also compared the Real environment to Juventus, citing another example when coach Maurizio Sarri moved to the Turin club. Some players complained that he still thought he was at Napoli, focusing on mere coaching. "At Juventus, players also said that the coach needed to manage the collective more effectively. Personally, I do not agree with that view, but that is the reality. Gareth Bale was with us here the other day, and he said that at Real, player management is paramount", the French legend emphasized.
"I feel sorry for Alonso, because we have seen what he achieved with Leverkusen when he coached a team ready to listen and execute all the coach's demands. But Real is an entirely different environment. There, you need a different approach", Henry added. "You must set your ego aside. These players have won titles here; let them help you get used to the pressure. Once you have one or two titles or a Champions League trophy, then you can start asserting your authority. But at the beginning, extremely high emotional intelligence is needed to understand the players and move forward together. The ultimate goal is a win-win for both sides".

Also commenting with Henry, Jamie Carragher defended Alonso's method, as a former Liverpool teammate. The English former center-back argued that having been a key player at the Santiago Bernabeu and coached by Carlo Ancelotti, Alonso fully understood how to manage the big egos at Real. However, these stars have been too pampered, and therefore the Basque coach could not act as if nothing was happening.
"I always felt that the job at Real is perhaps more suited to those who are on the downhill side of their coaching careers, those who intervene less deeply in tactics and lean more towards man-management", Carragher stated. "When you are young and passionate like Alonso, you always crave to impose your ideas and philosophy on the training ground daily. The only truly successful individuals were Del Bosque, Ancelotti, and Zidane; they were all great managers, but not necessarily outstanding pure coaches. That is the culture at Real".
