The World Athletics Championships will take place from 13/9-21/9 in Tokyo, Japan. To participate, athletes must meet the standards set by World Athletics (WA). WA's qualification period, based on results from international competitions worldwide, ended on 24/8.
Vietnam's athletics team did not achieve any official qualifying standards during this period. However, as is customary, WA will award a wildcard entry to the Vietnam Athletics Federation. In 2023, Nguyen Thi Oanh also participated in the World Championships through this route.
The Vietnam Athletics Federation confirmed that the coaching staff has selected My Tien, currently Vietnam's top female 100m hurdler, for the wildcard spot in Tokyo. This selection will be officially announced after the federation receives the invitation from WA.
"If I am selected, it will be a joy and honor for me," My Tien told VnExpress on the morning of 18/8. "I will try to seize the opportunity, learn, and gain experience for future tournaments."

In May, My Tien competed in the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea. She clocked 13.51 seconds in the qualifiers. However, in the final, she finished 7th with a time of 13.69 seconds.
At the recently concluded national athletics championships in Da Nang, My Tien won the gold medal with a time of 13.52 seconds. This was slightly slower than her personal best of 13.38 seconds. The national record for the women's 100m hurdles still belongs to Vu Bich Huong, set at 13.36 seconds in 1999.
The qualifying standard for the women's 100m hurdles at the World Championships is 12.73 seconds. Consequently, even the Asian champion, Jyothi Yarraji (India), who recently broke the continental record with 12.96 seconds, did not meet the qualifying mark for Tokyo.
Born in 1999 in Vinh Long, My Tien was once banned from competing for two years for leaving her locality without permission. Since 2023, she has been competing for Dong Nai. At the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, the hurdler won the gold medal with a time of 13.50 seconds. Achieving a top result at the upcoming World Championships will be challenging for the 26-year-old athlete, but it will serve as valuable training before the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.
Besides her athletic achievements, My Tien also attracts attention with her height of nearly 1.7m, a slender physique, and toned abs.
