Indonesian national team coach John Herdman should emulate Vietnam's Kim Sang-sik's dedication to understanding regional football and opponents, according to Indonesian football expert Ibam Hariri. This advice follows Indonesia's early exit from the ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage. Hariri emphasizes that while Herdman is working hard, a more proactive approach to regional competition is essential for success.

Hariri highlighted Kim Sang-sik's commitment as a prime example. "Last June, Kim Sang-sik personally visited Bung Karno Stadium to observe Indonesia's playing style. This is a crucial effort for a coach," Ibam Hariri told Kompas. The sight of the South Korean coach directly in the stands, observing opponents, signifies the dedication required from a team manager.

Herdman, appointed early this year, faced his first major challenge with the national team in the recent ASEAN Cup 2026. Hariri believes Herdman cannot be considered a failure based solely on Indonesia's group stage exit. A more accurate assessment of Herdman's capabilities will come after the FIFA ASEAN Cup this September. "After the FIFA ASEAN Cup in September, I will evaluate the players' and coach's abilities," Ibam stated, noting Indonesia could field a stronger squad with all overseas players then.

Despite Indonesia not reaching the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinals, Ibam acknowledged positive aspects of Herdman's work. The 51-year-old coach has remained in Indonesia, regularly observed national league matches, and sought to integrate into the local football environment. However, understanding only domestic football is insufficient. Herdman needs to research more broadly into the characteristics, culture, and competition among Southeast Asian national teams to help Indonesia succeed.

Indonesia's wait for a first ASEAN Cup title continues after Herdman's squad finished third in Group A with seven points, behind Vietnam and Singapore. In their final match on 7/8, Indonesia drew one-one with Singapore at Jalan Besar Stadium, needing a win to advance. However, Herdman does not view the recent tournament as a complete failure. He sees the ASEAN Cup as an opportunity to test young players and new faces, while also identifying the squad for upcoming tournaments.

One player who impressed Herdman was Mitchell Baker, a 19-year-old forward making his ASEAN Cup debut, whom the Canadian coach rated as having significant potential. According to Indonesia's coach, the tournament also helped young players better understand ASEAN football, from how opponents play, how matches are officiated, to the specific nature of a regional competition. Herdman also praised experienced players for their sacrifices. Yet, Indonesia still needs to improve its adaptability to the Southeast Asian football environment, a key focus for Herdman in the near future, according to Ibam.

"Don't let Indonesia's near qualification for the World Cup make us too proud and forget the competition in Southeast Asia," Ibam warned. Following the defeat, PSSI President Erick Thohir stated that the Federation would re-evaluate the team's performance to better prepare for future important tournaments. For Herdman, an opportunity to rectify issues will come quickly.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is scheduled from 21/9 to 6/10, during the FIFA Days. Indonesia is in Group A, top one, alongside India, Malaysia, and Singapore. Vietnam is in Group B with Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines. "The FIFA ASEAN Championship is approaching and is very important for us. Domestic and international players will be able to play together, so I am very excited," Herdman said. The Canadian coach even aims to help Indonesia win its first title at this tournament, asserting the team would return in October with championship ambitions.
