Inter Miami draws in Messi's absence

Inter Miami played to a 0-0 draw against FC Cincinnati in the MLS on 26/7, partly due to captain Lionel Messi's suspension.

Messi and Jordi Alba both served one-match suspensions for withdrawing from the All-Star game between the MLS All-Stars and the Liga MX All-Stars on 24/7.

Messi had scored braces in six of his last seven MLS matches. The only exception was a 3-0 loss to FC Cincinnati on 17/7.

The absence of the number 10 star impacted Inter Miami's gameplay and scoring ability. Despite having 57% possession and more shots (13 compared to 8), the home team couldn't find the back of the net against the MLS leaders.

Over the 90 minutes, FC Cincinnati created the more dangerous opportunities. Inter Miami's net could have bulged if goalkeeper Rios Novo hadn't been alert.

In the 92nd minute, Inter Miami narrowly avoided defeat thanks to a refereeing decision. Miles Robinson headed the ball past Rios Novo from a free-kick. However, after consulting VAR, the referee ruled out the goal due to a foul by the visiting team.

The draw cost Inter Miami the chance to close the gap on FC Cincinnati. Messi and his teammates are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference and sixth overall with 42 points after 22 games. FC Cincinnati increased their points tally to 49 but lost their top spot. Philadelphia Union's 3-1 win over Colorado on the same day propelled them to the top with 50 points. Inter Miami have played three fewer games than the top two teams.

Messi watched his teammates from the stands. His Argentinian teammate, Rodrigo De Paul, who is set to join Inter Miami, was also present.

Earlier, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas stated that Messi was very upset about the suspension. "The decision was truly harsh," Mas said. "Leo and Jordi don't understand why missing a friendly match led to a suspension. They understand the importance of the game against FC Cincinnati. They came here to compete and win."
