Kane scores, then misses penalty against former club Tottenham

Striker Harry Kane opened the scoring but later sent a penalty skyward as Bayern Munich defeated Tottenham 4-0 in a friendly match in Germany on 7/8.

In the 12th minute, Kane expertly controlled a long ball from his own half, outmaneuvering center-back Micky van de Ven before firing a left-footed shot into the far corner past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Two minutes later, the English striker had a chance to double the lead when Joao Palhinha, newly arrived at Tottenham on loan from Bayern, brought down Josip Stanicic in the penalty area. However, Kane slipped while taking the resulting penalty, sending the ball sailing over the crossbar.

This was Kane's second consecutive preseason encounter with his former club. In the summer of 2024, the 32-year-old notably declined to lift the trophy in London after Bayern's 3-2 victory over Tottenham in the Visit Malta Cup.

Kane, a product of Tottenham's academy, played for their first team from 2012 to 2023, scoring a club-record 280 goals in 435 appearances. In the summer of 2023, he transferred to Bayern for $130 million USD.

At the Allianz Arena, Bayern dominated possession with 58%, taking 26 shots with eight on target, compared to Tottenham's six shots and three on target. Following Kane's opener, Kingsley Coman, 17-year-old Lennart Karl, and 18-year-old Jonah Kusi-Asare added goals to secure the 4-0 win for Bayern.

Kane expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, highlighting Bayern's dominance, high intensity, and fluid play. He believed Bayern played even better in the final 20 minutes despite introducing several young players and acknowledged the mixed emotions of facing his former club.

Bayern had recently returned from the FIFA Club World Cup. They quickly regained their rhythm, defeating Lyon 2-1 before the resounding victory against Tottenham.

"This is just one of our first matches. The team played well, but we need to stay grounded. There's still much work to be done," said coach Vincent Kompany. "Mental preparedness is crucial. It's surprising to see such a performance at this stage. Typically, teams require five to six weeks of training, but we've only had about five days."

Bayern has one more friendly against Grasshoppers on 12/8 before starting the season with the German Super Cup match against Stuttgart on 16/8.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's poor preseason form raises concerns ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash with reigning Champions League winners PSG on 13/8.
