The Premier League champions have also guaranteed additional support for Jota's family, including a dedicated fund to cover his children's education until they reach adulthood.
Liverpool is scheduled to reconvene next Tuesday, 8/7. However, the team has postponed several pre-season activities to mourn their teammate. Understandably, they are not in the right frame of mind to train. Striker Mohamed Salah expressed his apprehension about returning to Liverpool without Jota.
Jota and his younger brother, Andre da Silva, were involved in a fatal accident on a curve on the A-52 highway in Cernadilla, Zamora province, western Spain, on 3/7. Their car suffered a tire blowout, causing it to lose control, overturn multiple times, and catch fire. Despite the immediate response of emergency services, both brothers died at the scene.
Liverpool published a heartfelt letter and tribute video, and opened both physical and digital condolence books. This allows fans, friends, colleagues, and the global football community to offer their final farewells to Jota and his brother, and share their condolences with the family and the club.

Jota's death came just 11 days after his wedding to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple first met in 2012 at the age of 13 while attending the same high school in Porto. They had been together ever since and have three children. In July 2022, Diogo and Rute got engaged, and they celebrated their wedding in Porto on 22/6, sharing photos of the ceremony and their family on social media.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. He made 182 appearances for the club, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. He played a key role in Liverpool's Premier League title win last season, as well as their FA Cup victory and two League Cup triumphs. He made his debut for the Portugal national team in March 2019, earning 49 caps and scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Jota's sudden passing has shocked the football community in both England and Portugal. Fans have laid flowers outside Anfield stadium. Players, coaches, and fans have expressed their deep sorrow on social media.
"Teammates come and go, but not like this. It's hard to accept that Diogo won't be with us when we return. I pray for his wife, his children, and his parents, who have lost not one, but two sons. Everyone close to Diogo and Andre needs all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten," Salah wrote on social media.
Coach Arne Slot remains in shock. "There are no words to describe how I feel. My thoughts are not as a football coach, but as a father, a son, a brother, an uncle. I want to say to Diogo and Andre's family: 'You'll never walk alone. The entire Liverpool family – players, staff, and fans – are with you'," the club's website quoted the Dutch coach.
Jota and Silva's funeral was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar Catholic Church on the morning of 5/7, in the same town where the Liverpool striker was married the previous month. The brothers were buried in the local cemetery following the official ceremonies.
Many of Jota's teammates from the Portugal national team and his former clubs, including Liverpool, Porto, and Wolves, along with coaches, football executives, politicians, fans, and members of the public, paid their respects. At Anfield, Liverpool created a memorial area for fans and players unable to travel to Portugal to lay flowers and light candles in Jota's memory.
