This new agreement marks a significant turning point in Mainoo's career. Not long ago, he had considered a loan move in the January 2026 transfer window while playing under manager Ruben Amorim. However, the Man Utd board rejected the proposal and kept him at the club. This decision proved correct as Mainoo gradually regained a starting position under interim manager Michael Carrick.
The new contract is for five years, replacing his previous deal which was set to expire in 2027. Mainoo previously earned around 25,000 GBP (34,000 USD) per week, meaning his new compensation represents a 500% increase. This is also the first salary raise for the Man Utd academy graduate since he was a teenager.

Negotiations between both parties had been ongoing since last year but made clear progress early this year when Mainoo's representatives began working closely with the Old Trafford board. Securing this promising young talent is a top priority in the club's rebuilding plan.
Speaking after signing the contract, Mainoo affirmed his special affection for the club. "Man Utd has always been my home. This club means a lot to my family," he stated. "I grew up witnessing the team's impact on the city and understand the responsibility of wearing this shirt."
The English midfielder also reflected on his journey from the academy to the first team, starting at training centers like The Cliff and Littleton Road, moving to Carrington, and finally reaching Old Trafford. "I am living my dream every day, with the same desire for success as when I attended my first training session at six years old," he added. "I feel the growing momentum within the club and want to play an important role in helping the team compete for major titles in the future."
Mainoo joined Man Utd in 2014 at nine years old. He debuted for the U18 Man Utd team in 2020 and won the FA Youth Cup, England's most prestigious youth honor, two years later. Mainoo made his first-team debut in 2023, scored his first goal a year later, and then scored in the 2024 FA Cup final against Man City. He has scored 7 goals in 98 appearances for Man Utd's first team.
Technical Director Jason Wilcox praised the potential of the player born in 2005. He described Mainoo as an exceptionally gifted young talent, possessing good technique, a professional attitude, and a humble personality. "He is a role model for young players and a prime product of the club's academy system," Wilcox said. "We believe Mainoo can become a world-class player."
Mainoo's rise is linked to Man Utd's transitional period this season. After Amorim's departure, Carrick provided more opportunities for young players, including Mainoo. The midfielder quickly seized this chance, becoming a regular starter in midfield. He started 13 of the last 14 Premier League matches, contributing to the team's improved league position.
His consistent club form also led to Mainoo's return to the England national team after a long absence. He played in the two most recent friendly matches, increasing his chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup. Previously, he also started in Euro 2024, including the final match.
At the club level, Man Utd will continue to strengthen its squad around Mainoo. The Old Trafford club plans to sign two additional central midfielders in the summer transfer window as Casemiro's contract expires. The Red Devils' targets include: Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Sandro Tonali. They once considered Elliot Anderson a primary target, but the Nottingham Forest midfielder prioritized joining Man City.
