Malaysia defeated Vietnam 4-0 in the second leg of Group F of the Asian Cup 2027 final qualifiers at Bukit Jalil Stadium on 10/6/2025. However, the team was later penalized with a 0-3 loss for fielding seven foreign-born naturalized players using forged documents. Malaysia also received a 0-3 loss against Nepal, despite winning their opening match 2-0. These overturned results caused Malaysia to lose the top spot and a place in the Asian Cup 2027 finals to Vietnam.
Malaysia has not secured a victory against Vietnam since the second leg of the AFF Cup 2014 (now ASEAN Cup) semifinals, where they won 4-2. Over the past 20 years, Malaysia has recorded only two wins, 13 losses, and two draws against Vietnam.
Vietnam currently holds a Southeast Asian record with a 12-match winning streak. Their last defeat was a 1-2 loss to Thailand in a friendly match in 9/2024. Following that, Kim Sang-sik's squad has remained unbeaten in 16 matches, securing 14 victories.
