Man Utd’s new signing, Bryan Mbeumo, made his debut at center forward, a departure from his usual right-wing position. Despite this, the 25-year-old forward made an immediate impact with a one-touch pass to Amad Diallo, who made a run down the right side of the penalty area in the 17th minute. Diallo was brought down by center-back James Tarkowski, earning the Red Devils a penalty. Captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted the spot-kick, sending Jordan Pickford the wrong way.
Following the goal, Man Utd's play became somewhat passive, allowing Everton to gain control of possession. A misplaced pass by Manuel Ugarte just outside the penalty box led to an opportunity for Everton. Idrissa Gueye delivered a perfect cross to the far post, where Iliman Ndiaye was waiting to tap the ball into the back of the net, equalizing for Everton.
At the start of the second half, manager Ruben Amorim substituted Mbeumo, as he was not yet fit enough to play a full match. However, Man Utd managed to regain the lead through a brilliant individual effort by Fernandes on the left flank. He then passed the ball to Mason Mount, who, from about 16 meters out and at a 45-degree angle, curled a beautiful shot into the far corner.
While Fernandes was instrumental in both of Man Utd’s goals, he was also responsible for the error that led to Everton’s second goal. He gave away a dangerous pass in midfield while his teammates were pushing forward. Everton launched a swift counter-attack, and in an attempt to clear the ball, Amad inadvertently deflected Ayden Heaven’s shot into his own net.
