For the first time in League Cup history, the final will be a clash between the top two teams in the Premier League, and the match result could significantly impact the season's outcome.
Arsenal still has opportunities across all four competitions. Besides the League Cup final, they are 9 points ahead of Man City in the Premier League, will face Sporting in the Champions League quarterfinals, and Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals. Man City, though eliminated from the Champions League, can still aim for a domestic treble.
"Arsenal will be motivated to pursue a quadruple if they win this final. Given the draw results for various competitions, their Premier League position, and the current squad, it is entirely possible," Merson wrote on Sky Sports. He emphasized that this is Arsenal's toughest match, as they face an experienced team that has won multiple titles under Guardiola at Wembley.

"For me, the Premier League is practically decided," Merson stated. "A 9-point lead means Arsenal's position is only threatened if they lose two or three more matches. Facing Sporting in the Champions League, they can play poorly for 30-40 minutes and still be fine. The FA Cup draw is also favorable, playing Southampton. Therefore, this final is very important."
Merson, who came through the Arsenal academy and played for the first team from 1985-1997, won seven titles. The former English player recalled the feeling when Arsenal defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the 1987 League Cup final.
"That was a title under George Graham, which created momentum for Arsenal to later win the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Cup Winners' Cup. A defeat would affect the players' morale. But if Arsenal wins, what chance do other teams have?" Merson expressed.
Merson also considers this a significant match for Guardiola, whose contract with Man City runs until summer 2027. Guardiola has managed Man City since 2016, winning 18 titles, with the peak being the treble in the 2022-2023 season. However, the Spanish manager faces pressure as Man City has declined in the two recent seasons. According to English media, Guardiola and Man City are preparing to meet to discuss whether to continue or part ways after the 2025-2026 season.
"I do not know if he has decided his future yet, but this match could have a big impact," Merson commented. "If Man City is defeated in the final, amidst other teams getting stronger, this could be the time Guardiola needs to consider leaving. If he reverses the situation to win the Premier League title this season, that would be his greatest achievement at Man City, because they are no longer the team of four or five years ago."
Regarding personnel, Merson predicts Kepa Arrizabalaga will continue to start for Arsenal, with Viktor Gyokeres partnering Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard in attack, while Kai Havertz could come on for the last 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, Man City will control possession, but quick and precise ball distribution is a key factor for Erling Haaland to be effective.
