Palmer: 'Everyone said Chelsea would lose the final'

Midfielder Cole Palmer reveled in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over PSG in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, despite being considered the underdogs.

"It's a great feeling," Palmer told DAZN after the match at MetLife Stadium. "It's even better when everyone doubts you, saying we would lose before the match. We knew that and had a good final against a great team."

Palmer was named the player of the match in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final. At MetLife Stadium, New Jersey on 13/7, the English midfielder shone with two left-footed curlers, giving his team a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes. At the end of the first half, he continued to make his mark with a through ball to Joao Pedro, who chipped the ball delicately over Gianluigi Donnarumma to seal a 3-0 victory.

Palmer has been involved in 6 goals in his last three finals for both club and country. He scored a goal against Spain in the Euro 2024 final, provided two assists in the Conference League final victory against Real Betis, and scored two goals and provided one assist against PSG yesterday.

Palmer praised his manager, Enzo Maresca, for his suitable tactics and for building a strong team. This season, Maresca has led Chelsea to two titles, including their first Conference League title and becoming the inaugural champions of the newly formatted FIFA Club World Cup.

"Maresca is building something special," Palmer said. "People have said a lot about us throughout the season, but I feel we are on the right track. The coach has a great plan. He knows where the spaces will be, tries to free me up as much as possible and I just have to repay him by scoring goals."

Palmer's image appeared alongside Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius on billboards in New York throughout the FIFA Club World Cup. The 23-year-old midfielder also enjoyed taking photos of these moments with his phone. "I saw the billboards in Times Square and outside Madison Square Garden," he said. "It's great to be alongside players like them."

Maresca praised Chelsea's young team for executing the plan perfectly. "We set the tempo and were very good at applying pressure," he said. "These are the matches where we expect Palmer to make a difference. Big matches and big moments, and once again Palmer showed how good he is."

Chelsea earned 125 million USD for winning the FIFA Club World Cup and will have three weeks off before returning to training to prepare for the new season. They will open their Premier League campaign by hosting Crystal Palace on 17/8. "Of course I'm excited about the future, but I'm even more excited because we have three weeks off," Maresca said.
